Nintendogs: Shiba Inu and Friends (Japan version) REVIEW

(Cover, cartridge, and back cover)

So I recently learned that DS games are NOT region locked which predictably resulted in me going on a foreign DS game shopping spree (all Japan exclusive dog games of course). One of which was the original Nintendogs “Shiba Inu” version (which was Japan exclusive)! I’ve been wanting to replay Nintendogs (of which my original copy of “Chihuahua & Friends” has countless hours of playtime), so what better way than to experience it again with the Japanese version! It’s basically the same thing as the Labrador version except in Japanese right? WRONG! Here’s my review highlighting the many differences between this version and the others released in North America/Europe.

(Splash screen and home screen, featuring my first adopted dog, a white female Toy Poodle I named Lady.)

Less Breeds…

First off, the starting breeds in the Shiba Inu version are slightly different than the Labrador version.

Shiba Inu version has: Shiba, Sheltie, Poodle, Corgi, and Min Pin.

Labrador Version has: Lab, Schnauzer, Poodle, Corgi, Min Pin, and Shiba.

And yes, you only start off with 5 breeds instead of 6! Also worth noting that all the Japanese versions do NOT have the Husky, Boxer, Golden Retriever, and Dalmatian breeds! Apparently those were exclusive only to the rest of the world.

Less Items….

The Japanese version also has less clothes items. It’s missing the Rhinestone Collar, Pearl Necklace, Star Sunglasses, Sombrero, Viking Hat, Santa Hat, Fireman Hat, New Year Tiara, and Rainbow Wig. Quite a lot! Also it is interesting that the Jack Russell Book in this version is a plain white book with the title “Say Hello!” (this is an actual real Japanese picture book about Jack Russell puppies that was popular in Japan at the time). Since the real life book reference would be unknown to international audiences, the in-game book’s cover was changed for the international versions of the game (see comparison image below). As for Interiors, Japanese versions are also missing the “Seaside” beach house! BUT the Japanese versions do have ONE exclusive item that the rest of the world doesn’t have: the “Afro Wig”! It looks the same as the Rainbow Wig except solid black.

(Jack Russell Book: Japanese Version on the Left, International Version on right.)

Less Commentary?

Remember the comedic commentators from the competitions? In the Japanese versions, Ted Rumsworth is replaced by an Asian guy named “Suzuki Hajime”. Archie Hubbs is renamed “Inukai Hitoshi” and is less talkative. I feel there is overall less dialogue from them, which may be better or worse depending on how you feel about them (I personally liked their cheesy exchanges but I know some people didn’t so this may be a plus for you!)

(Winning our first Agility competition! (Suzuki commentating) and meeting Archie (Inukai) and Spot (Shiro) on a walk.)

Other Small Notes…

The cover art and box design is great, it features an adorable Shiba puppy! The cartridge is a neon bright green color (versus the dark forest green of the Labrador version). It also takes longer to unlock stuff in the Japanese version as the Trainer Point tiers are higher. Finally I was sad to discover that you cannot Bark Mode with other (international) versions. In other words, Japanese versions can only Bark Mode with each other and not North American/European versions because of the additional items/breeds which are not written into the Japanese versions.

Final Thoughts…

Overall I was disappointed to discover that the Japanese edition of Nintendogs is very much a prototype or downgrade from the rest of the world’s versions. I would’ve thought that since the game originated in Japan that they would get the best version but instead the rest of the world was oddly spoiled with extras (maybe because the later international release dates meant that the developers had more time to add stuff?). So I do not recommend this or other Japanese versions unless only for collection or curiosity purposes.

Thanks for reading! 🙂 What are your thoughts on the Shiba Inu version? Comment below!

Nintendogs+Cats Obedience Trial Guide!

(NOTE: The charts in this guide are taken from the official N+C Guide Book which was only released in Japan. I’ve simply recreated them and translated the information into English to share with y’all).

Here are some useful charts and guidelines to help you successfully compete in the N+C Obedience Competitions! First is a chart showing all of the tricks and procedures required in each level of Obedience, that way you’re prepared and know which specific tricks to practice! The next chart shows you how many points each trick is awarded in the Free Style round, that way you can make a plan on which tricks to do to get the highest score possible. At the bottom there are some general trick guidelines to help training go more smoothly!

Trick Training Tips!

*Dogs with the personality traits of “sharp mind” and “sharp as a tack” are the smartest and easiest to train (they learn quicker). So if you’re adopting a dog specifically to compete in Obedience with then I recommend getting one with either of these personalities. If your chosen dog has a different personality that’s fine too! He can still do Obedience successfully, it might just take a little longer so be patient!

*Be sure to use the best treats during training (Beef Jerky, Heart Cookies, Puppy Chews). They may be expensive but they’ll help your dog learn faster (and they’ll make him happier as these are his favorite)!

*The first “trick” your dog learns is his name. Yes that counts as a trick and can be used in the Obedience Free Style round! Call his name and he’ll bark to confirm (so it’s kinda more like “speak”). Because of this, when teaching him other tricks, make sure not to call them something that sounds similar to his name! Otherwise he’ll get confused and simply bark at you instead of doing the other trick.

*Try not to have tricks sound to similar to each other! This sometimes means changing what the in-game trick guide calls them. For example, instead of “Right Paw” and “Left Paw” (which your dog will easily confuse) call them instead “Right” and “Left”. Plan ahead of what you’re going to call each of the 17 tricks so you don’t accidentally end up with two that sound similar and have to re-teach them. Sometimes though, even if they don’t sound similar, your dog may still confuse them. Sometimes it’s just trial and error to see what commands work best for your individual dog!

*To teach a dog to hold a trick for a certain amount of time all it takes is practice, practice, PRACTICE! Simply practicing the same trick repeatedly will make him hold it for longer. Once he starts to hold it for more than a couple seconds, delay in giving him a treat. Wait for him to hold the trick as long as he can before giving him a treat. Over time he’ll start to hold the trick for longer periods, it just takes lots of practice and patience!

*Sometimes I’ve noticed that about half way through obedience training your dog may suddenly “forget” a trick and start doing a different trick in its place! Sadly in these cases it is best to re-teach your dog the trick using a completely new sounding name.

*In the chart above you may see some tricks you don’t recognize (Back Flip, Front Flip, Bunny Hop, etc). These are the special “secret” tricks that your dog will only do when in top condition (click here to learn more about them). These tricks are perfect for the Obedience Free Style round as they’ll earn you more points! So I recommend “conditioning” your dog before entering an Obedience competition so you can take advantage of those awesome big tricks (click link above for instructions)!

Obedience Trial Tips!

*Side Note: the Obedience competition is a lot easier on N+C than the original Nintendogs given that the 3DS has a better mic and the trials have less/easier requirements. So if you had a bad experience doing Obedience in the original (I know I did lol) don’t avoid it here, give it a try! 😉

*Before entering make sure to study the charts above, that way you’re prepared and know which tricks you need to practice. Make a plan ahead of time of which tricks to do in the Free Style round so you can quickly go through the ones which will earn you the most points. Practice your chosen routine at home so you can see what works and what doesn’t, that way you don’t fumble or waste time during the actual trial.

* “Help, I don’t have the AR cards to do the Competition!” Sadly the worst thing about the Obedience trial is the fact that you need to use an AR card to do them. But if you don’t have any, don’t fret! You can simply print out a picture of one and the 3DS should still pick it up. Here is a link to an easy-print PDF from the official Nintendo website.

*During the competition make sure you have your 3DS at the same angle/distance that you’ve been using when training! Otherwise you might sound different and your dog may not understand the commands. I know this can be tricky given that you have to keep an AR card in camera view. So what I recommend is during the beginning of the trial, while Ted is talking, you can test and set up your 3DS and AR card in the best possible position (make sure the room is not too dark).

*Also try to keep your 3DS still during the competition itself! If your 3DS stops picking up the AR card in the middle of the trial then your screwed as your dog cannot do the tricks if he’s not in view! While setting up at the start make sure to test by moving your 3DS a little in all directions to make sure the AR card is in a good stable visible place that won’t disappear at the slightest movement.

*Hope these tips help you and good luck, but most importantly have fun! 🙂

Nintendogs+Cats Secret Tricks Guide!

So here is something that was greatly missing in the N+C community: a guide to the 7 “secret” special tricks! I’ve seen so many people asking about these tricks and no real helpful answer online as few seem to have actually done them. SO, using the help of the official Japanese guidebook, I decided to make a walk-through showing you how to do them!

FIRST, the shocker: The 7 Secret Tricks can NOT be taught! They are simply special versions of existing tricks which occur only when your dog is in top physical and mental condition! (more on how to condition your dog below!)

The 7 Special Tricks!

(click here to see a video of them in action!)

BACK FLIP

To do this: tell your dog to SIT, as soon as he does tell him to JUMP!

FRONT FLIP

To do this: tell your dog to ROLL OVER, as soon as he does tell him to JUMP!

BUNNY HOP

To do this: tell your dog to STAND UP, as soon as he does tell him to JUMP!

WAVE PAW

To do this: tell your dog to either SIT or SIT UP or LIE DOWN, as soon as he does tell him to either RIGHT PAW or LEFT PAW!

HIGH FIVE

To do this: tell your dog to SIT, then instruct either LEFT PAW or RIGHT PAW (he’ll do the Wave Paw trick first), then instruct the opposite paw. This time he’ll do the high five trick. (Note: these are the official instructions but I find that I need to instruct LEFT and RIGHT multiple times before he does the High Five instead of the Wave Paw trick.)

FAST SPIN

To do this: simply tell your dog to SPIN!

HEAD DOWN

To do this: simply tell your dog to LIE DOWN.

(Tricks showcased by my Dal-Wannabe Lab VICE! Please do NOT use or repost these images!)

How to “condition” your dog!

First, let me address a question I often see asked: how many Owner Points does one need (or how many Heart Points does a dog need) to do these tricks? The answer: It doesn’t matter! I’ve tested this myself both using a save file of mine with little Trainer Points and using a new dog fresh from the Kennel. Points don’t matter, as along as the dog knows the basic tricks required in the combination (and you do the steps listed below to condition it) it will do the special tricks! 🙂

To do the Secret Tricks you MUST condition your dog, otherwise he won’t do them. First your dog must know the basic tricks! Practice often and use the best training treats (Beef Jerky, Puppy Chews, and Heart Cookies). Once he knows them it’s time to get him in “top condition”. What that means is simply that his health stats must be maxed! This is easy, simply do all of the following at the same time: Feed him food (it doesn’t matter which, dogs love all foods equally). For drink give him either water or the formula milk (I recommend the Formula as dogs like it better than the water but either will work). Then give him a bath (any shampoo, although the premium is quicker). His profile stats should then read as follows:

Hunger: Full
Thirst: Quenched
Coat: Beautiful

Then play either the “Classics 5” (Skaters Waltz) record OR the “Naptime” record. Let it play on normal speed in it’s entirety (I recommend doing the Skater’s Waltz record as the song is shorter/faster lol). Once it’s done your dog will wake up. Immediately call him over and start doing the required combination of tricks! Your dog will then do the special tricks! BUT he’ll ONLY do them for that one training session! After doing about 8 tricks the camera will pan out and return you to the main menu. If you call your dog over again he won’t do the secret tricks anymore. How do you get him to do them again? If his stats are still maxed simply play the record again! Once he wakes up call him over and he’ll do them (but again only for one session). Now how do you get him to do them in the Obedience Competition? Simply after maxing his stats and playing the record, immediately go enter an Obedience Competition. That way he’ll do the secret tricks for the Free Style/Open Performance round and earn much more points! (Click here for an in-depth Obedience Trial/Trick Training guide!)

Hope this guide is helpful for y’all, have fun! 🙂

Nintendogs+Cats Personality Guide!

(NOTE: The information and chart in this guide are taken from the official N+C Guide Book which was only released in Japan. I’ve simply recreated the chart and translated the information into English to share with y’all).

Having trouble deciding on your new pet’s personality? Or want to better understand your current pet(s)? Well this handy guide will help! Here I will explain how a pet’s personality bio will reflect on their behavior. This should help you find the pet best suited to your needs!

This guide can be used in conjunction with my Personality List here!

How to use this chart: simply look at a pet’s personality bio (for already owned pets it can be found in the pet’s profile by clicking on their avatar). Find the corresponding key words on the left column and on the right column it says how they’ll tend to act. If your pet has a mix of two keywords then they’ll have a mix of the two behavioral patterns. Note: the keywords used in this chart apply to the North American version of the game (the European version differs slightly in words but even then you should still be able to tell which is your pet’s personality).

Personality KeywordsBehavioral Tendencies
Easygoing, Laid-Back, CarefreeWill often sleep or rest. Will have a strong interest in furniture. Slow to become hungry/thirsty. Often stops during walks.
Gentle, Calm, Mild-Mannered, Liked By Everyone,
Troublesome/Shy With Other Dogs.
Has difficulty getting along with other dogs/cats in household. Quiet and doesn’t bark often. Easy to control during walks.
Rascal, Mischievous, Naive, Rambunctious,
Boundless Energy, Loves Running/Jumping.
Fidgety and often walks around. Quick to become hungry/thirsty. Very active during walks and doesn’t stop often.
Likes Having Owner All To Their Self, Gets Along Better
With People Than Dogs, Loves People Especially Owner.
Quickly bonds to owner. Loves to be petted. Has difficulty getting along with other dogs/cats in household. Tends to not get along with other dogs during walks.
Curious, Interested In All Sorts Of Things,
Loves/Fascinated By Everything (Around Them).
Bold and takes great interest in everything (toys/furniture/items), but gets bored quickly. Easily distracted during walks.
Sharp Mind, Proud, Stubborn, Requires Persistent Training.Quick to learn tricks/sports. Slow to bond with owner. Doesn’t like to be pet too much and is short-tempered. Tends to not get along with other dogs during walks.
Giddy, Silly, Friendly To Strangers, Loves New
People, Will Approach Anyone.
Slow to learn tricks/sports. Will be friendly towards other people*. More likely to find rare items during walks. Gets along well with other dogs during walks.
Bright, Cheerful, Loves Toys/Playing With ToysTakes a great interest in toys and other items. Is very playful towards owner. Tends to be vocal. Coat is easily dirtied.
Tomboy, Naughty, Loves playing With Everyone/Friends.Easily gets along with other dogs/cats. Tends to be vocal.
*Referring to the 3DS’s face recognition technology. Your dog/cat recognizes your face and if someone else uses your 3DS they’ll either react shy or friendly depending on their personality. In this case they’ll be outgoing and friendly towards your guest player.

Personal Note: This chart is exactly as it appears in the guidebook. I disagree with a few of its rarity ratings but I decided to leave everything as is. Also the chart only refers to regular walks, NOT the pedometer walks (which has a much larger pool of items).

Present Finding Tips!

*During a walk you’ll find present boxes your dog can pick up. They may contain any of the above listed items in the chart. Some presents will be obvious in the middle of the road. Others may be hidden in the grassy patches, so be sure to let your dog visit all the grass spots!

*In the Downtown and Seaside areas, you’ll often see small traffic cones. Slow down your dog and have him carefully weave around the cones without touching them. If he does it correctly a present will appear at the end! This takes a lot of practice and is best done with a calmer well-trained dog. Having a small dog also helps as the bigger breeds tend to hit the cones more often. Note: there will be various cone set-ups, some with a few widely spaced out (easier to weave through for large dogs), and others with lots close together. I haven’t found a difference in doing either, the presents are the same. I think the various set-ups are simply to cater to puppies of all sizes.

*Occasionally during a walk, in any of the main areas, a sign will appear for what is called the “Secret Path” (the sign will show a silhouette of a person walking their dog). GO THERE! On the Secret Path there will be many presents! If you go on the Downtown or Seaside secret paths there will also be lots of cones to weave through (a great chance to practice)!

*Dogs are more likely to find more/better presents if they are well taken care of! Make sure your dog is physically fit, well-fed, hydrated, and clean! Most importantly, make sure he is HAPPY! Spend plenty of time playing with him and training him!

*According to the official Personality Guide, dogs with the following personalities are more likely to find rare items during walks.

(Note: I have not tested this out myself so I’m unsure of how true it is…)

This male/female wags for both friends and strangers.

This male/female is fond of people and will approach anyone.

This male/female is friendly with anyone, even new people/strangers.

*To get your Kitten to bring you a gift you must leave your 3DS open and running by itself for about 30-40 minutes. Make sure you have it facing away from you so that the face-detection camera doesn’t detect you. After about 40 minutes your Kitten will leave. Get your 3DS and tap the bottom screen. Your Kitten will enter your house with a present! List of possible items your kitten can bring you are listed in the chart above!

Complete List of ALL ITEMS in Nintendogs+Cats!

Preface: I know this list is like 10 years too late but oh well. When I started playing N+C I was disappointed to not find any complete item list (there are plenty for the old game but only a few scattered incomplete/messy lists for this game). So now that I’ve finally gotten all the items (through hacking) I decided to make this list for those who still play the game. I made up the categories so it’d be better organized and easier to reference. Almost all items are presented in the order they are in your inventory (only a few switched around to better suit a category). All names are as they appear in-game (North American version, other regions may differ slightly in names). Anything in parenthesis are my personal notes. I also made a simple key system to indicate which items are exclusive to one version of the game. BONUS: Here is a video I made showing all the items too!

How to hack the Nintendogs + Cats 3DS game

Simple guide to hacking “Nintendogs + Cats” to get ALL items, max money, max Trainer Points, change pets names, and change houses!

What you need

  • Computer with internet
  • SD Card Reader for computer
  • 3DS (with Homebrew and JKSM installed)
  • Nintendogs + Cats game (any version)
  • The Nintendogs + Cats Save Editor program

In order to do this you’ll need to have Homebrew and JKSM installed on your 3DS system, if you already do then skip to Step 3.

WARNING: as with any time you “hack” a system/game, there is always a risk that something can go wrong. I am not responsible if something does go wrong for you while following this guide (although it shouldn’t as I and others have followed these steps without issue).

  1. Follow the instructions on this website to get Homebrew on your 3DS (it’s fairly simple but time consuming so be prepared). After you’ve finished then go to the next step.
  2. Put the SD card back in your computer. Download JKSM here, unzip and place the 3 files in the “3ds” folder on your SD card. Put the card back in your 3DS and insert the N+C game too.
  3. Launch the Homebrew program and open JKSM. It should then show N+C selected, if not scroll to it and then press A.
  4. A black menu screen will pop up, select “Save Data”. Then Select “NEW” and type in a name (you can name it whatever but for this tutorial I’ll call it “normal”) and enter it. It should now appear in the list (this will be your backup!). Select “NEW” again and this time type in another name for what will become the hacked save and enter it (let’s call it “modded”). After you’re done, press B to go back to the main menu and select EXIT to return to the Homebrew menu.
  5. Turn off your 3DS and put the SD card back into your computer. On the card there should now be a folder called JKSM. Follow this directory: JKSM>Saves>Nintendogsandcats. You’ll see the two folders you previously named, each contains a DAT file (this is your save file). The DAT file in the “modded” folder is the save file you’ll be editing.
  6. *THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP* BACK UP THE “NORMAL” FOLDER! In case anything goes wrong you need to have a backup of your original regular save! Copy the “normal” folder somewhere on your computer and better yet also on the Cloud or a flash drive just in case!
  7. Download the Nintendogs Save Editor program here. Launch it and select the Open option at the top. Find the DAT file in the “modded” folder (directory should be: SD Card>JKSM>Saves>Nintendogsandcats>Modded>Sysdata.dat). The program is pretty easy to use and self-explanatory (you can give yourself max money, max trainer points, all items, change houses, and change pets’ names). Make your desired edits and select save.
  8. Put the SD card back in your 3DS and open Homebrew and JKSM again. Go into “Save Data” and select “modded”. Press Y to restore (load) the save file. Confirm and there should be a loading bar for a few seconds. Once it’s done, exit out of JKSM and Homebrew.
  9. Open the N+C game and it should load up your save with all your edits made! But if anything goes wrong (or you’d just like to return to your original unedited save) then just load up the “normal” save in JKSM to go back to your original unedited file. NOTE: if you want to keep your progress in the new save make sure you save within JKSM BEFORE loading up another file! Save by going into “Save Data”, selecting the save’s name, and pressing A to overwrite (save) it! You can always make more edits to a save later using the method outlined above. (Note: this multi-save method has some special bonus perks which I’ll write a guide for soon!)
  10. ENJOY YOUR ENHANCED NINTENDOGS EXPERIENCE! 🙂 Comment below if you have any questions and I’ll try to help!
